La ruta «Glaciar del Río Mosco» se ubica en el mismo escenario geográfico de Campo de Hielo Sur, en medio de uno de los tantos valles patagónicos históricamente surcados por el paso de colonos y avezados excursionistas que han dejado las huellas que intentamos retomar.
El recorrido es una interesante combinación de escenarios geográficos en que estaremos avanzando por la Cordillera de los Andes y presenciando lagunas, glaciares, cordones montañosos, centenarios bosques y renovales que cubren una extensa área de gigantescos troncos carbonizados producto de un antiguo incendio forestal.
El circuito se inicia en Villa O`Higgins, a una altitud de 265 m.s.n.m, específicamente en el Parque Cerro Santiago, administrado por la I. Municipalidad de Villa O`Higgins en conjunto con la Corporación Nacional Forestal (Conaf) y termina en el glaciar del Mosco a 678 m.s.n.m. Es una ruta lineal, es decir, la ida y el retorno se realizan por la misma senda. Tiene una longitud de 10 km. y se encuentra señalizada en su totalidad. Es posible recorrerlo en un tiempo aproximado de 5 horas y durante todo el año.
Durante todas las estaciones los escenarios invitan a la contemplación, la primavera da paso al verde y a la floración del calafate, el chilco y el notro; el verano nos ofrece los frutos mientras, que acercándonos al otoño los majestuosos bosques se tornan rojizos en distintas tonalidades que sobrecogen por su belleza.
Es importante señalar que el trazado recupera una antigua senda usada por los primeros habitantes de la zona en 1930 y los trabajos de recuperación han sido impulsados por la I. Municipalidad de Villa O’Higgins, a partir de 1997.
A través de la ruta es posible encontrarse con gran cantidad de aves, desde el majestuoso Cóndor hasta el bellísimo carpintero negro patagónico. El bosque existente es el hábitat preferido por numerosas especies, entre ellas el tímido ciervo de los Andes, el huemul. Otros animales presentes, más difíciles de ver son los zorros y ocasionalmente el puma.
Múltiples cursos de agua entregan hermosas caídas, al final del sendero existe una espectacular caída de 25 metros que posee un gran caudal. También podrá disfrutar de lagunas cordilleranas, y morrenas, que evidencian el dinámico retroceso de los hielos producto del cambio climático de los últimos años. Durante el recorrido podrá disponer de áreas para acampar y de abundante agua para beber.
The «Mosco River Glacier» route is located in the same geographical setting as Campo de Hielo Sur, in the middle of one of the many Patagonian valleys historically crossed by the passage of settlers and seasoned hikers who have left the tracks that we are trying to retake.
The tour is an interesting combination of geographical settings in which we will be advancing through the Andes Mountains and witnessing lagoons, glaciers, mountain ranges, centuries-old forests and renovations that cover an extensive area of gigantic charred logs product of an ancient forest fire.

It is important to point out that the route recovers an old path used by the first inhabitants of the area in 1930 and the recovery works have been promoted by the I. Municipality of Villa O’Higgins, starting in 1997.
Throughout the route it is possible to meet a large number of birds, from the majestic Condor to the beautiful Patagonian black woodpecker. The existing forest is the preferred habitat for many species, among them the timid deer of the Andes, the huemul. Other animals present, more difficult to see are foxes and occasionally the cougar.
Multiple water courses provide beautiful falls, at the end of the trail there is a spectacular 25-meter fall that has a great flow. You can also enjoy mountain lagoons and moraines, which show the dynamic retreat of the ice as a result of climate change in recent years. During the tour you will be able to have camping areas and plenty of water to drink.
